Is it really healthier to be a vegan with all the heavily processed vegan foods?

I really belief it is healthier to avoid meat, especially after reading the article in my medical journal that prooved it causes cancer. However, many of the vegan foods are heavily processed. Is it healthy to eat all these heavily processed vegan foods? I mean, lets face it, I doubt people are sitting around eating fresh fruits and vegetables. I want to note that I am asking this question out of curiousity, I personally am a raw juicearian.

I think too much of any processed food is unhealthy. We in the US need to promote eating more fruits and vegetables (they are the original fast food, after all!). Overall, a plant-based diet is healthier than a meat-based diet, as you mentioned from your journal. If a vegan lives on processed vegan food, though, I don’t know that he/she is going to be much healthier than the meat-eater who eats fruits and vegetables.

Personally, I have attempted to avoid as much processed food as I can. Not only is it unhealthy (in my opinion), but it’s expensive and half the time doesn’t taste good.

I would love to look around the street or cafeterias in about 5 years and see most people walking around munching on apples and carrots and celery. I think if properly promoted, this can be a reality.

Stay away from the fake meats, ice creams, and cheeses then. A true vegan diet is based on fresh: beans, peas, nuts, seeds, grains fruits and veggies.

I think it’s very possible to be unhealthy on a vegan diet if you eat all the processed cr@p that’s popped up over the past few years. Ice cream bars, cookies, cakes, pizza, hot dogs etc. Even in the vegan form they are terrible for you. It’s getting almost as bad as the SAD.

The best thing you can do is try to eat foods as close to their natural state as possible. I still eat cooked food, but as much raw as possible seems to be the way to go. I only eat processed vegan foods as “treats” maybe once a week.

You don’t need to eat processed food if you’re vegan. We try to cook from “scratch” as much as possible, and eat a lot of beans, nuts, fruits, vegetable and grains.
