You don't need to eat processed food if you're vegan. We try to cook from "scratch" as much as possible, and eat a lot of beans, nuts, fruits, vegetable and grains.

I think it's very possible to be unhealthy on a vegan diet if you eat all the processed cr@p that's popped up over the past few years. Ice cream bars, cookies, cakes, pizza, hot dogs etc. Even in the vegan form they are terrible for you. It's getting almost as bad as the SAD.

The best thing you can do is try to eat foods as close to their natural state as possible. I still eat cooked food, but as much raw as possible seems to be the way to go. I only eat processed vegan foods as "treats" maybe once a week.

Stay away from the fake meats, ice creams, and cheeses then. A true vegan diet is based on fresh: beans, peas, nuts, seeds, grains fruits and veggies.

I think too much of any processed food is unhealthy. We in the US need to promote eating more fruits and vegetables (they are the original fast food, after all!). Overall, a plant-based diet is healthier than a meat-based diet, as you mentioned from your journal. If a vegan lives on processed vegan food, though, I don't know that he/she is going to be much healthier than the meat-eater who eats fruits and vegetables.

Personally, I have attempted to avoid as much processed food as I can. Not only is it unhealthy (in my opinion), but it's expensive and half the time doesn't taste good.

I would love to look around the street or cafeterias in about 5 years and see most people walking around munching on apples and carrots and celery. I think if properly promoted, this can be a reality.
